“Award-winning author Sherrill S. Cannon is at it again with her newest book, My Little Angel, telling a delightful story about a little girl and her guardian angel.

The star of our adventure, a sweet little girl (we never learn her name), tells the reader about her very special friend, Angela, who just happens to be her guardian angel. Angela sits on the girl’s shoulder and is dressed is a light blue dress with matching shoes, a halo, and white, almost translucent, wings. Angela always wears a big smile, and sparkling light seems to follow her wherever she goes.

The little girl talks about all the wonderful things her guardian angel does. For example,

She helps keep me safe as I’m walking to school,

Reminding me always to follow the rules.

She makes me look both ways when crossing the street,

And she makes sure I’m careful where I put my feet.

The author takes the reader through a full day of events, at home, at school, even getting ready for bed, with the guardian angel constantly at the girl’s side. Angela reminds the girl of many important things too, from brushing her teeth in the morning, saying “Thank you,” “Excuse me,” and “Please,” to helping her say her prayers at night. If she’s afraid, Angela is there to console her, and remind her to “Think of others, be helpful and kind.”

As soon as you read the first line of My Little Angel, you’ll know you’ve opened a good book:

Angela sits on my shoulder and glows –

Whatever I do or think, Angela knows…

The story, written in a nice-flowing rhyme, tells a sweet story that also helps impart life lessons (manners, caring for others) to young readers. Like the other books by Sherrill Cannon, this one is illustrated by Kalpart, a company that has a reputation for creating delightful images for books. Again, Kalpart does not disappoint as the drawings are vibrant and fun and are a perfect compliment to the story. At the back of the book the author has included “Special Notes” that ask children to a) hunt and find images of different book covers in the story; b) answer questions about their own safety habits; and c) answer questions about the story. Finally, if you purchase the author’s books from the website sbpra.com/curejm, 50% of the sales will be donated to help find a cure for Juvenile Myositis – a win-win for everybody!

Quill says: My Little Angel is a wonderful story for little ones who will love reading about Angela, a guardian angel, and dreaming up what their own guardian angel might look like and do to help them.”

I got an email update from Sherrill S. Cannon today, could not restrain myself from sharing.

Had to Share this one! Titled: A Masterpiece for the Young and Young at Heart.

Sherrill S. Cannon’s newest edition to her marvelous children’s books, Mice & Spiders & Webs… Oh My, probably rates among the best children’s books I have read to date.

I felt Rosie’s pain and fear at the prospect of facing her fears of Mice, Spiders, and yes Spider Webs. I knew her bravery when with the help of her mother was willing to face her fears and attempt to work through them. And I laughed at the outcome, down to the ‘female’s only.’

Never have I read a little book that charmed me so, with a message so subtly written that shows how one’s fears can be baseless.
Ms. Cannon has definitely another hit on her hands and one that I wouldn’t be surprised if it stole the hearts of each and every child who read it.
It is more than a teaching tool, more than a fascinating story, and much more than the cleverly done rhyming verse that is so popular for the young ones. It is a masterpiece, fit to join the ranks of any of the great children’s stories that have enchanted and delighted generations of young ones through the years.

If this reader whose childhood is so far behind them can find the joy and beauty in this little story, my bet is any child will also find all that and more.

The Illustrations by Kalpart, completely swept me away with the brilliant colors and how they followed the story so completely.
So highly do I consider this book that I fully intend to have a copy of my own. Not just for the little ones, but for those times I wish to laugh and remember those fears and pleasures from my childhood.

A caricature cum family cartoon drawing

In the last November, I was requested to draw a family of 21 people into a nice funny caricature drawing. A lot of different photos of all the members were provided. Though the photos were not crisp and clear as the client had to dig out some very old photos of the senior members of the family and scan them. I had to request a lot of new/old different photos of each members still, to get a better understanding of facial and body features of each family member. The biggest challenge was to create a nice happy family picture where everybody is busy in their own favorite activity. So actually it was a double difficult job, as it was not only to work with not so clear photos of the members to create resembling character out of it, but also to align and adjust each person according to their age and activity. The family members were supposed to be busy in small groups enjoying themselves, like a family get-to-gather for a house warming or a Thanksgiving. I am thankful to my artists who worked together to compile this complicated yet enjoyable family drawing. This is an advantage when you work as a team. Meaning of Caricature by World Encyclopaedia

Caricature from photo by Kalpart
Caricature from photo by Kalpart

caricature (It. caricare, load or surcharge) Painting or drawing in which a person is presented in a comic, often ridiculous, light by distorting their features. Caricature may be used to interpret the character of a person, event or age. The genre first appeared in the late 16th century. Hogarth attempted to distinguish between depicting character and comic likeness, but the two traditions merged. In the 20th century, many popular graphic artists have combined caricature with social and political satire, and today most political cartoons are caricatures.
