The bedtime stories are a ritual which is followed generation to generation to prepare a child to sleep. When there were no books available as bedtime stories, the parent or the guardian used to create their own stories which would inspire the child to prepare for the life’s events. Bedtime stories were a powerful medium which helped the child to build up a character helping him/her to face the real world.

Bedtime stories can help imbibe the good manners and habits; it plays an important role in the child’s life and it has been proved by the researchers. The researchers have discovered that bedtime stories nourish the child to enhance his vision, ideas and reading ability. It is very important how the bedtime stories are read or narrated to a child. The well written, narrated and illustrated children book can enhance the child’s interest in the story and the books and it will inculcate a habit of reading information from any time of books. The bedtime stories include many different characters such as animals, birds, etc. and if the reader expresses and conveys these characters by hand signs and symbolic actions, along with the suitable expressions, it can help the child get engrossed in the story, and can help these different characters/animals very easily. It also develops their vocabulary as well as the pronunciation skills by observing the storytellers. Bedtime stories have also been able to help parents, guardians or grandparents to develop a strong bond with their children and grandchildren. Continue reading Children and bedtime stories

What is a difference between Cartoon and Caricature?

There are only few people, who are able to differentiate between the cartoon and caricature, as visual comparison does not show much of a difference, but technically, caricature is difficult to draw and takes a lot of time to master. A cartoon is a drawing or simply a two dimensional visual art. The idea behind the cartoon creation was to develop another new method that can express the story in a different way and which would encourage or motivate children to read or get engrossed in it with a lot of interest. A caricature is described as a portrait that has high features of a certain person. Caricature can be termed as an imitation drawing of a person, but expressed in fun and exaggerated manner.

A cartoon is an imaginary character drawn, to create and imply fun. Cartoon can be made of a human, animal, bird or anything. Cartoon can change or extend its boundaries till the imagination of the artist. Caricature is a cartoon created by using a person as a model and is also created for fun, but its appearance mainly depends upon the looks of the original person whose caricature is created. Caricature only is a distortion of some features of the person, so as a whole, the person still can be identified.

Both cartoons and caricatures can be used for various purposes and a lot of them are common. Newspaper articles, media, children storybooks, comic books, newsletters, websites, TV commercials and movies are different medium where the cartoons or caricatures can be used. Cartoons have become more associated with children and depict similar storylines such as good vs. evil. Today’s children show a lot of interest in the TV channels with cartoons. Caricatures do not require a set storyline, you can write an article about a person and add his/her caricature along to add a novelty and interest to the article. Most political caricatures are used to create controversy. Political caricatures are highly exaggerated and comic, mainly created to add a negative humor into the subject.

Caricatures are also be created for friends and family members for gifting. Caricature of the wedding couple on the wedding cake is a novel and fancy idea and has started becoming a new craze among the youngsters. Caricature of a wedding couple on the wedding invitations or caricature posters on the wedding venue is also a new trend. At the same time, posters of popular cartoon characters can be added to the birthday venues for children birthday parties. Famous cartoon characters on birthday cakes for children is not new.

Despite these differences, however, the word “cartoon” is still used as a popular synonym for “caricature”.

Why do children like rhymes and rhyming stories?

The most enjoyable and occupying task of the playschool or nursery is singing and dancing with rhymes. Rhymes don’t need any props to set a scene; they depend on the sound of the voice reciting the language to stimulate play. Some may be accompanied by physical actions, which help to understand and memorize the rhyme. Nursery rhymes are fun, children love them. Rhymes are child-friendly means of introducing children to the wonder of narratives and the imaginative potential that the stories found in books can offer. Songs and rhymes for young children have been passed down for generations. Illustrating Rhyming books is an altogether a different topic to be discussed.

“Experts in literacy and child development have discovered that if children know eight nursery rhymes by heart by the time they’re four years old, they’re usually among the best readers by the time they’re eight.” [Fox, M. (2001). Reading Magic. San Diego, CA: Harcourt.]

Children love to act out the rhymes as they say them, dramatizing the actions of the characters with their whole bodies or using their hands and fingers. When children are encouraged by an adult to display their creativity in an atmosphere that is free of criticism, and due to which their self strengthened and confidence get increased, which can also help shy children to loosen out and mix up with the peers.

When children recite rhymes and sing songs, they learn new words and learn how to pronounce them along with the modulation of their voices. While rhyming they can also practice pitch and volume. They learn to pronounce words easily by saying them over and over again and by practicing them without effort or the pressures of criticism.

Rhyming children books allow children to enjoy their studies with lots of fun and that as well without having any pressure of criticism. If you know about any good rhyming book for children, please write about it here along with your views how you remember rhyming from your school days and how it effects the children.

Sherrill S Cannon’s all books are rhyming stories and have all won several awards. The latest award received by Sherrill is the Manner-Man and have won the Global eBooks Silver Medal. All books written by Sherrill are illustrated by Kalpart.
