Why do children like rhymes and rhyming stories?

The most enjoyable and occupying task of the playschool or nursery is singing and dancing with rhymes. Rhymes don’t need any props to set a scene; they depend on the sound of the voice reciting the language to stimulate play. Some may be accompanied by physical actions, which help to understand and memorize the rhyme. Nursery rhymes are fun, children love them. Rhymes are child-friendly means of introducing children to the wonder of narratives and the imaginative potential that the stories found in books can offer. Songs and rhymes for young children have been passed down for generations. Illustrating Rhyming books is an altogether a different topic to be discussed.

“Experts in literacy and child development have discovered that if children know eight nursery rhymes by heart by the time they’re four years old, they’re usually among the best readers by the time they’re eight.” [Fox, M. (2001). Reading Magic. San Diego, CA: Harcourt.]

Children love to act out the rhymes as they say them, dramatizing the actions of the characters with their whole bodies or using their hands and fingers. When children are encouraged by an adult to display their creativity in an atmosphere that is free of criticism, and due to which their self strengthened and confidence get increased, which can also help shy children to loosen out and mix up with the peers.

When children recite rhymes and sing songs, they learn new words and learn how to pronounce them along with the modulation of their voices. While rhyming they can also practice pitch and volume. They learn to pronounce words easily by saying them over and over again and by practicing them without effort or the pressures of criticism.

Rhyming children books allow children to enjoy their studies with lots of fun and that as well without having any pressure of criticism. If you know about any good rhyming book for children, please write about it here along with your views how you remember rhyming from your school days and how it effects the children.

Sherrill S Cannon’s all books are rhyming stories and have all won several awards. The latest award received by Sherrill is the Manner-Man and have won the Global eBooks Silver Medal. All books written by Sherrill are illustrated by Kalpart.

    2. I am currently finnshiig up my BA in Child Development and Family Studies and thus far I have only work with children from 2 weeks to adolescent while helping support their families. The Physician that I would want to work under is an Obstetrics (OB) because they are in direct contact with pregnant women and their children during pregnancy. I would choose this particular specialty for a variety of reason such as having the opportunity to see individuals become parent for the first time, seeing how much love is surrounded in the process, being there to help the mothers while there in a vulnerable state. One of my main reasons is because I think that the whole birthing process is fascinating and to be able to be a part of family’s lives while going through this process, I imagine to be extremely rewarding.A of physician specialty that I would least want to work with would be a psychiatrist. Although I believe that psychiatrist do some spectacular work and help a lot of people through difficult situations I personally believe that this job would be to emotionally draining and overwhelming for me. This makes me question whether or not I would be able to handle it. When I set out to do a job my goal is to do the best that I can and I don’t feel that I could successfully do this job to the best of my ability.

  1. We’re aiming at 3-8 year olds, and our first goal is to have them eaisthpme with the characters who sing the songs. The rest is secondary. These are simply songs that address children’s issues, and which happen to have Shakespeare as their source.Wow, I’ve only been on Twitter for a few days, and it’s working well for me! MT stands for “Modified Tweet.”

    1. I couldn’t agree more about getrcirias. I miss sitting with some of the elderly individuals I used to help and they would tell me stories for hours about the things that they witness when they were younger, and the lives that they lived up to the point that they needed care. I have always felt that the elderly know how to live their lives better than anyone, and they for sure never take it for granted! Sometimes the people taking care of them are not good people though, and it always breaks my heart to see someone talking badly to an elderly man or woman.I like how you made a switch from little tiny babies that have no real experience with life, to elderly men and women who have lived life to its fullest and still have more life to share with others. Such opposites!

    1. This sounds wonrudfel. And just right for a Grandma who used to be an English teacher. What age group are you aiming for?Found you on Twitter. What does MT stand for?

    1. Wow, I think you will be a great OB. It seems like you have a real love for children, fmliaies, and people in general. Sad to say that those qualities are rare traits in todays world. I believe not just anyone should be in just any job because you could be in a job that you hate and end up making everyone who comes in contact with you at work miserable. You have the joy and care to be great at your job and effect those you will be working around not only by your knowledge , but by your love for what you do.

      1. Great rhyme tip. It is wonderful when you read a book for the first time and your 3, 5 or 7 year old can fiinsh the last word of the new sentence. It is also wonderful when your kids memorize the story and tell it or read it to you. The results of reading to your kids is so rewarding. We sure have enjoyed both the stories and pictures of your Bear books. We just brought home your Bears Feels Sick and it is great. Thanks for making reading so much fun.

    2. The type of physician I would like to work for is a Pediatrician. Pediatrician’s siacpelty is to work with children. I have been working with children for a long time mainly because I work at a daycare facility. I’ve got to a point where I feel like I can handle anything that will come my way with them. It would also leave me feeling good at the end of the day to know that I have helped in some way to make a child feel better. The type of physician I would not care to work for is a Epidemiologist. Epidemiologist’s specialize in epidemics caused by infections agents and also work with sexually transmitted diseases. I feel if I were to work in this type of siacpelty I would be putting my self at risk of exposure to these infectious agents. Also I would be focusing a lot of my time on trying to not get infected instead of having a steady mind on what I was actually supposed to be doing.

    1. I have not really chsoen what kind of specialists I would like to work under, but I do believe that it would be fun to work in a Psychiatrist’s office. I originally was going for my B.A. in Psychology, but switched. There are so many to choose from that sound absolutely interesting. Such as working under an Internist or going simple and working under a Family practitioner. Even Gerontologist sounds like fun. I love the “aging population” and they have stories and much to teach. For the moment I am going to take this degree one step at a time and try to find the place that fits me best.

    2. I know what you mean. I have been trying to acescs web pages from my internet at home and I haven’t been able to get to certain sites. Yet, at work I can acescs them no problem. I guess they don’t want us to acescs certain information. I tried to acescs the pension website and it states that the site has moved or something(my Korean is not good). So life is life in Korea.

    1. I really like the sictiimlpy of this approach to songwriting, Liz. The children are clearly the creators and only need simple prompts for rhyming to find they have become writers on a song. The group process builds community and confidence everyone is a winner! Katharine’s song is a perfect way to get the brain and body recharged in an easy-to-learn and free-form movement song. Great post!

    1. Those of us who have published even a few poems are ayawls glad to see someone from the younger generation getting into it, as we believe that an appreciation of poetry is essential to a fuller life. It is a good thing, in the beginning, to perhaps compare learning to write poetry to learning to play the piano. One starts by practicing scales for months, then simple tunes, sometimes for years, and after maybe ten years one can play a nice piece very well. But one does not start with a complex piece. One should know that to write a good poem one also needs about ten years of practice, in this case reading good poetry, over and over. But because it is so easy to write down words, much easier than to play a good tune on the piano, some think that they can write an interesting poem right away. Now poetry is more like music than like short stories: it is a different way of writing. The musicality of the poem is more important than the literal truth of the poem, and usually a poem is NOT very true to literal facts, but to our feelings, just as music is. Poetry is the art of hiding our meaning just a bit, in order to make the reader search us out.It usually tries to show us, with images, instead of just telling us, with statements, facts. It should surprise us with language we never thought of before. Above all it must avoid cliche, use images that we did not expect. Many first poems show how the author has plenty of feeling for the subject, but you know, we all want our own feelings, not someone else feeling for us.Reading a poem, we are all like children: we want to be surprised. What do you think of this:Among twenty snowy mountains, the only moving thingwas the eye of the blackbird.Of course if we can see 20 snowy mountains, we cannot see at the same time a birdb4s eye.But the contrast between great and small, black and white, stability and movement,is so interesting, who cares if it is true?Tell us some great lies, give us a big surprise, an emotion, make us feel!To make your reader feel (and all of us want to have our own feelings, not just hear about anotherb4s) you want a surprising, even a startling image. Try this, by Elinor WyliePROPHECYI shall lie hidden in a hutIn the middle of an alder wood,With the back door blind and bolted shut,And the front door locked for good.I shall lie folded like a saint,Lapped in a scented linen sheet,On a bedstead striped with bright-blue paint,Narrow and cold and neat.the midnight will be glassy blackBehind the panes, with wind aboutTo set his mouth against a crackAnd blow the candle out. Will she really go to live in a cabin in the woods, is she talking about her wish to die? (Of course not, she was a sophisticated poet and she is inventing, but we donb4t care, because she has interested us with her images.)She is obviously alone and despondent, and she makes us feel something by the strong images she invents. We are surprised at the end. Her last bit of light is put out, what happened? We have to invent, to imagine, to make up our own meaning. That is poetry. If you want to carry on, and I hope you do, I recommend Emily Dickinsonb4s poetry. In this onePresentiment is that long shadow on the lawnIndicative that suns go down; The notice to the startled grassThat darkness is about to pass.I think she is talking about death, but does not mention the word, she makes us work for it.Surprise us, give us feeling! (you are on your way, keep at it.)

    1. I also have greatly adiermd Ruth’s books, and didn’t realize she got into CB publishing so late in her life. According to a bio in Meet the Authors and Illustrators (v.2), she started her career designing gift wrap, kites, posters, cards, and coloring books. It took her five years to find a publisher for Chickens Aren’t the Only Ones. She is credited as one of the innovators in the late 1970s/early 80s (along with Joanna Cole and Gail Gibbons) who rethought nonfiction to make it as lively and imaginative as fiction.I was fortunate enough to chat with her at a conference in about 2002 and see her presentation. She was very friendly and mentioned working on some new math-related ideas. I don’t know how far those projects were developed… it would’ve been wonderful to see what she could do with that subject matter.
